How we handle CUI.

Controlled Unclassified Information is part of federal contract work. We treat it that way.

Many of the matters we handle involve Controlled Unclassified Information — performance data, technical documentation, agency correspondence, and audit material that an agency has marked, or that a contract requires us to treat as if it were marked. We treat material as CUI when an agency or contract marks it, when contract clauses require us to handle it as if marked, or when the matter type makes the assumption prudent. We confirm the handling posture at engagement and adjust as facts develop. We hold and transmit it on systems aligned to NIST SP 800-171: PreVeil for client-attorney exchange and document storage, and MyCase for matter and document management. Personal email, consumer cloud drives, and SMS are not used for client material.

If you need to send us CUI before we have set up a secure channel, tell us first — we will provision a PreVeil exchange for the engagement and route the transfer through it. If you have separate handling instructions from your agency or your prime, we will follow those instead. When a matter closes, CUI is retained, segregated, or returned according to the retention schedule and any contract-specific direction. Questions about a specific document or marking go to Mark G. Jackson directly.
